Writing in the Middle of Busy Schedule

"One may be as clever as he can be, but as long as he does not write, he will disappear in the society and from the history," said Pramoedia Ananta Toer.

Some people want to be a writer, but most fail to manage him/ herself well. Hadi Suyono is one of the authors of non-fiction books who are able to write while working full time as a lecturer.

The psychology lecturer who is working at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) has several ways to manage his time in developing and utilizing his hobby. He claims to feel anxious if he has not produced any work. The first way he does is to formulating the draft. If we have created a skeleton, then it will be easy to continue the writing without getting out of context. Someone who does not complete his/ her writing job within the time, is likely to forget the things he/ she is about to write down. Thus, the framework of the writing is necessary to avoid the issue.

In addition, Hadi, who is also a father of two children, is always trying to keep the rhythm. The point is to keep the mood in writing. Thus, a person will be able to pour something that is in his mind well, without being influenced by external factors.

Hadi never thinks of writing as a burden. He regards his work as a passion. By assuming the job as passion, then we will be comfortable and happy in doing so. Of course, we will gain something financially after we enjoy doing our work.

The key of writing is a lot of reading. Someone will be able to write well after he/ she reads. By reading, one gets the knowledge and insight to be poured into a writing.

In the middle of his busy schedule, surely someone must have a leisure time. Hadi uses that time to write. Before becoming a lecturer, he used to have a specific time to write, for example before performing the dawn prayer service. (doc)

(dok)

Lecturers Must Have Awareness to Write, Why?

A lecturer of Indonesian Language Education (PBSI), Dr. Rina Ratih exclaims that in order to live a more meaningful life, one needs to write.

"A good lecturer should write because it will be a good example for the students. In addition, writing is a form of expression," said Rina when interviewed at campus 4 of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) on Tuesday (15/05/2018).

Unfortunately, not many lecturers are aware of this. The commitment to always be istiqomah (committed) in writing is very necessary. To do that, there needs to be an awareness of the importance of writing.

According to Rina, the quality of literacy in UAD, especially in PBSI Study Program, is good. Some lecturers have awareness to write and create something. Ideally, every lecturer must be like that. All this time, the first step taken by Rina to be a single and productive writer is to publish a work on her every birthday. It aims to motivate others to write as well, especially in PBSI of UAD.

Publishing a book is not an easy task while she is also busy with her job as a lecturer. The motivation of each of her writings comes from her awareness and commitment.

Starting from S1 (Bachelor’s Degree) to S3 (Doctorate Segree), Rina Ratih has produced numerous achievements. She graduated from IKIP Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (now UAD) in 1986. She then pursued her Master’s degree in Literature at the Faculty of Post-Graduate Cultural Sciences of Universitas Gadjah Mada with the cum laude title as the best graduate with a GPA of 4.0 in 2003. She is a model lecturer at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and Kopertis Region V of DIY.

In 1987, Rina was appointed as a lecturer at UAD and has been working at the university until now. (Doc)

Social Media as a Means of Maintaining Good Relationship

After a full month of Ramadhan fasting and Eid Al-Fitr holiday of 1439 H, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) held a syawalan (a gathering event to apologize and forgive each other) attended by all lecturers and employees. In addition, there was also a release of 19 pilgrims from UAD.

The event that took place on Saturday (06/23/2018) in the auditorium of campus 1 UAD on Jln. Kapas 9, Semaki, Yogyakarta, presented a taushiyah (the broadcast of da’wah) by Dr. Haedar Nashir, M.Si., the Chairman of Central Board of Muhammadiyah. In his taushiyah, he conveyed the importance of actualizing the values of better quality relationship in the family, society, UAD, in relation to religiosity and nationality.

"Good relationship is a value that is always upheld and has become a collective culture. Its essence brings together brotherhood, whether tied together with biological or social relationships," he explained.

Haedar added that currently, maintaining good relationship can be done through social media. According to him, social media can be utilized as a means to share things about virtue.

"The negative aspect of social media is the exposure of bad character which should be avoided. Social media is often associated with freedom. This media may reproduce and produce many things that can trigger disintegration," he said in front of the invited guests.

On the same occasion, UAD Rector, Dr. Kasiyarno, M.Hum., mentioned the absence of lecturers and employees on the first day of work after Eid Al-Fitr holiday. He expressed his thoughts that the good buildings and facilities offered by UAD did not affect the performance of the employees for the better.

"The university needs to be managed well, especially since it is a private university. We must make extra efforts," said Kasiyarno.

He assumed that the work ethic at UAD should be improved for the university to be more advanced and known, both nationally and internationally. In addition, according to him, we had to pay attention to the students.

"UAD's revenues are still dependent on the students. The business owned by UAD has not been able to fully finance the university since it has just been developing. Therefore, lecturers and employees should treat students well. "

On the other hand, Dr. Bambang Supriyadi, C.E.S., D.E.A., the Chairman of Kopertis V, in his speech, expressed his expectation for UAD to add lecturer with doctorate degree to improve the quality of the university. Currently, UAD is one of the 68 universities that have been accredited A in Indonesia. (ard)
