UAD FKM Students Have an Internship at UTeM to Study K3

Three students of the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) will have an internship in August 2018 at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). The students who are from occupational health and safety (K3) of FKM are the first interns to go abroad. They are Susan Feriana, Luthfatul Marifah Rahmawati, and Muhammad Ghazali.

From the explanation delivered by the Dean of FKM, Lina Handayani, S.K.M., M.Kes., Ph.D., internships are part of the curriculum which is when students are given an opportunity to apply the theory they have learned in class.

"Theory learning and field practice must be balanced. Therefore, the location and place of the internship must be considered carefully," she said, while accompanied by Oktomi Wijaya, S.K.M., M.Sc. and Muchamad Rifai, S.K.M., M.Sc., in FKM dean room on Thursday (6/28/2018).

At FKM, the internship location is divided into several categories, from local, national, and international levels. Up to now, most of the internships are help on the national level. By having an internship, students will know the real situation in the society since the main subject of FKM is the society.

On the other hand, Oktomi who is the field supervisor conveyed that while having an internship in Malaysia, the students will study K3.

"For a full month, the three students will study at UTeM and visit various companies in Malacca. This experience will be very beneficial for them in the work field later."

Meanwhile, the manager of FKM K3, Muchamad Rifai explained that K3 is field that attracts the students’ interest the most.

"In the work field, K3 is needed, both in governmental offices and any industries, and has become a necessity. In Indonesia itself, it is a new trend," he said.

To improve the quality of internships and students, UAD FKM continues to develop the K3 curriculum. He expressed his expectation that students could improve K3 in Indonesia and monitor the development of K3 globally. (ard)
