Students and Lecturers of UAD Followed ISSEL 2016

      The Department of Astrnomy, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Academy of Indonesian Sciences (AIPI), and The National Aerospace and Air Nautica (LAPAN) held a symposium entitled ‘International Symposiumon Sun, Earth, and Life (ISSEL) 2016’. The main agenda took place at eastern hall of ITB lasting for two days (3-4/06/2016). In the event the participants discussed scientific matters in parallel sessions and visited a poster and photo exhibition.  

            Speaking in the event were Head of LAPAN Thomas Djamaludin, AIPI, NASA, and Indian representatives. The main topic in ISSEL 2016 was solar eclipse so that it was the climax of solar eclipse talk. The event was ended by an excursion to Bosscha Observatory to introduce researches and instruments.  Some 16 institutions from home and foreign countries took part in ISSEL 2016.

One of the institutions was University of Ahmad Dahlan (UAD). Two research results of UAD students and lecturers were presented in the event. The research entitled ‘Outreach Activities in Anticipation of the 2016 Solar Eclipse in Sorong’ was presented in the first day by Endra Putra Raharja a student of Physics Department. His research is related to socialization and education on solar eclipse in the area which needs understanding of astronomy. Though Sorong did not witness Total Solar Eclipse (GMT), the understanding of solar eclipse is still necessary to teach.

Meanwhile the research result entitled ‘The Sky Brightness Measurement During the 2016 Total Solar Eclipse in Ternate’ by Yudhiakto Pramudya, Ph.D., a lecturer at Magister Program of Physics Education and Head of Astronomy Study Center (PASTRON) UAD was presented at the second day. This research examines the development of brightness at the sky during the solar eclipse at Ternate, North Moluccas.

‘Moreover, nine photographs by lecturers and researchers of Pastron UAD were nominated in the exhibition,’ Yudhiakto said.

 It was Vice Rector I of UAD Dr. H. Muchlas, M.T. who contributed the photographs of the solar eclipse in Ternate. While researchers of Pastron UAD contributed more photographs. They are Lukmanul hakim, and Mustofa Ahyar, S.Pd.

According to Yudhiakto, the success of the lecturer and students was a continuation of the success of TIGER (Eclipse Team) in carrying out streaming on solar total eclipse (09/03/2016). With limited resources, they gained national as well as international reputation. For sure, if the resource and instrument increase, UAD will improve its achievement and contribution to society.
